Trends in Public Health
September 18, 2003

The partners of Ohio Advocates for Health Care Access came together for our first educational forum on September 18, 2003. Entitled “Trends in Public Health,” the morning forum focused on Medicaid and medical liability.

The event began with a keynote address from Dan Mendelson, managing director of The Health Strategies Consultancy LLC in Washington DC. Dan’s remarks focused on trends in Medicaid. His power point presentation as well as a handout on developing a preferred drug list is available to the right. Mr. Mendelson invites OAHCA members to email him with questions or comments about his presentation or other studies completed by The Health Strategies Consultancy LLC. Mr. Mendelson can be reached at dmendelson@healthstrategies.net.

Following the keynote address, two panel discussions were presented and featured some of Ohio’s top lawmakers and officials who work with Medicaid and medical liability issues.

The first panel focused on Medicaid trends. Participants included State Representative Greg Jolivette who serves as Chair of Health and Family Services Committee; State Senator Lynn Wachtmann, who serves as Chair of Health, Human Services and Aging Committee; Barbara Edwards who serves as Deputy Director, Ohio Dept. of Job and Family Services, Office of Ohio Health Plans; and Dan Mendelson. OAHCA partner Laura Moskow Sigal with the Mental Health Association of Franklin County served as moderator for the panel.

The second panel focused on medical liability. Participants included State Senator David Goodman; Tim Maglione, who serves as executive director for the Ohio State Medical Association; Brian L. Bachelder, M.D. and immediate past president of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, and Ann Womer Benjamin who serves as director for the Ohio Department of Insurance. OAHCA partner Nick Turkas of the Arthritis Foundation – Central Ohio Chapter, served as moderator for the panel.

Following the panel discussions, Jo Ann Davidson provided an update on legislation of interest to OAHCA members, including the Good Samaritan bill, the federal Medicare prescription drug benefit proposal, the “boutique hospital” legislation, and the prescription drug agreement between PhRMA and the Coalition for Affordable Prescription Drugs.
